How to Get Fit at Home

At first glance, the gym is a daunting place. Rows of machines that look like torture devices, red-faced Arnold Schwarzenegger wannabes and ribbon-slim girls sprinting on treadmills – it can seem quite terrifying to think about stepping foot inside.

Don’t fret. If public workouts aren’t your thing – or if you don’t have the time to drive out to the gym on Saturday mornings – then there are plenty of ways to get your blood pumping at home. Your body will thank you for it

1.     Get warmed up (the easy part).

Climb up and down the stairs a few times. Hit the treadmill for a few minutes. This is basically telling your body that it’s time to wake up.

2.     Aerobics.

Tie up your laces and go for a jog around the neighborhood. Or blow the dust off your bike and start pedaling. You should feel yourself begin to sweat and your heartbeat quicken as your lungs work to get air in and out.

3.     Strength-building.

This is the part where your muscles burn. Sounds like fun, right? Don’t worry, you can do some simple exercises to get started, such as floor stretches and yoga poses. Leave the squats, push-ups and crunches for when you feel more confident.

4.     Cooling down.

It’s important to give your body a rest after a tough workout, especially if you’re just starting out. Have a lie down. Chug some water if you haven’t already. You’ll definitely want to hit the showers to wash all that sweat off.

Why is exercise important?

Stress is one of the main triggers of break-outs. Endorphins released when you work out make you feel good and reduce your risk of getting acne. Also, when you exercise, blood flows through your body and takes nutrients to your skin, giving you a healthy glow. Not to mention that firmer muscles make you look better overall.

Daily workouts generally last about thirty minutes. You can increase the duration and intensity as you become more experienced. At the same time, start eating healthier foods – especially leafy greens and soy products. After a few weeks you’ll notice that you’ve lost weight and gained energy, as well as clearer skin. Just remember to wear sunscreen and don’t push yourself too hard.
