5 Skin Mistakes That Make You Look Older
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, or so they say. That won’t stop us from clinging to youth for as long as we can, though. After all, looking young is the same as looking good. Right?
Ironically, some skin techniques and products can actually make you look older. We’ll tell you which ones to look out for – and which skin blunders to avoid.
Here’s a list of the five most common skin faux pas:
#1 Too much tan.
If you’re concerned about wrinkles, freckles or brown spots, then you should probably stay out of the sun altogether. No matter how many antioxidants and anti-aging creams you have in your bathroom, any benefit from them is far outweighed by the damage you’re doing to your skin by deep tanning.
Wear sunscreen! It’s not necessary to spend a lot of money on expensive department store products, but try and find one with SPF 30 or higher. Recently, researchers found that people who applied sunscreen daily were far less likely to acquire wrinkles or sun spots than those who didn’t. Dermatologists agree that no single factor is more detrimental to your skin’s health than excessive sun exposure.
#2 Too much foundation.
If you’re overdosing on foundation, it will become obvious to anyone who stands close to you. Use just enough, or use a tinted moisturizer instead. For people with flaky skin, foundation can sometimes appear blotchy and sap the glow out of your complexion. To combat this, put on moisturizer before applying foundation and exfoliate 2 – 3 times a week (be careful of over-exfoliating, which can cause dryness and itchiness). And remember that you don’t have to cover every inch of your skin with a paintbrush. Make-up is meant to enhance your skin, not take it over.
#3 Too much eyeliner.
Long lashes are one of the defining traits of a beautiful woman, but too much eyeliner will leave your eyelids looking heavier than they are. Pure black eyeliner can be a bit harsh, so try using dark brown instead, which will draw some attention to your eyes without taking them over. Use just enough to make your eyes pop, but be careful with the amount you apply – you don’t want it to clot or smudge.
#4 Horrible hair.
The right hairstyle can accentuate your best features while the wrong style can add years to your appearance; common hair mistakes that add years to your age are a too-heavy fringe, a vintage-looking coif (for god’s sake, they were using this one back in the 17th century!), artificial-looking dyed hair or simply unkempt hair.
#5 Too much lipstick.
Deep, dark colours can make you look sexy and mature when you’re in your early twenties. Any older and the colour can actually make your lips look tight and pursed. Applying lipstick straight from the tube can also lead to some smudging, so use your finger to spread it around evenly and top it off with a balm or light gloss.
